Why doesn't it have a title? That should raise a red flag...

Google is your friend: "lost Kansas title"

Kansas Revenue web site

"lost Missouri title"

Missouri Revenue web site

I'm not going to do all 48 other states, so if you're going farther out of town, you'll have to chase it yourself! :)

why doesn't it have a title? that IS a red flag. If there saying they can't find it, thats bullshit, you can file for a lost title. I smell poo.

no title = no value.

Well this tow lot got it cause, i guess this car dealership went out of business and i guess some guy got into alot of trouble and left some cars there, so they towed the zx2 and it sad at there lot forever, then i talked to them and i said i wanted to buy the whole thing. so they said they gotta file for a lost title cause they couldnt get ahold of the guy with the dealership. I called them today cause its been about 2 months and they said they gotta take it to the highway patrol and see if they can get it through them. But i was trying to speed up the process a little bit, and iw as gonna try an get it but im having trouble trying to figure it out, cause im not sure if i can do it or not, im thinkin they gotta do it but i dunno?.

You can't do it by yourself. It may take the tow lot a while to get it straightened out.

A duplicate title will be issued in the name of the last owner, or the tow lot may have to go through an "abandoned property" process.

The only way you might be able to help the process along is if you can figure out whose name the car is currently registered in, see if you can locate them, and see if they will sign over a duplicate title. If you have the VIN, and know a friendly police officer or license bureau/DMV worker, they may be able to look up the previous owners name.

The process of a car dealership is usually this: the former owner of a car trades it in, and signs the back of the title, but leaves the "buyer" open. The dealer can transfer the car around, even to other dealers, but there still isn't an "owner" of the car until a dealer sells it to an individual.

You should also check with the DMV to see if there is a lien on the car. Then you've got more troubles with a bank.

My father used to get them all the time when he worked at a tow lot. If they are a legit business they should be able to take care of it for you. I only know about PAs...

They are not clean titles by the way. I forget the name of the title but it's essentially a lost and found title. Impound title or something along those lines.

It is possible but as mentioned it is a pain in the ass. My dad would file the paperwork with the dmv and a few weeks to months later it would come in and he'd scrap the car or whatever he wanted
