When tie-rod ends go bad, they usually don't pop or make noise. Usually, you get uneven tire wear or sloppy steering from a bad tie-rod. To test for a bad tie-rod end, jack up the car (safely) so that the front wheel is off the ground, and see if there is any "play" or "slop" when trying to move the wheel side-to-side like it was making a turn.
Tie rod ends are fairly inexpensive - $30 or so. Plus, the car will need an alignment after the tie-rod end was replaced. (Or a do-it-yourself toe-in/out adjustment, but I'd just recommend an alignment.)
A popping noise around corners could be half-shaft or drive-axle CV joint(s) that is(are) going bad. Here's a thread that talked about CV joints and boots and noises:
CV joints /bootsI'm not saying it's definitely CV joints, but usually a failed tie-rod doesn't make noise. Maybe you should have a mechanic look at it???
