is the fabric insert on the inside door panel glued on? or is it screwed in from the other side?? and is the bottom speaker panel screwed in from the back or is it just popped in place? on the Zx2
trying to get things painted :)
thankz
If my memory is correct the bottom one is glued into place. Either that or is melted into place via a hot poker. And top piece again if memory is correct is hog ringed into place….you really shouldn’t paint the upper piece, it will turn out like crap

go to your local fabric shop before i come over and pick out a yard of whatever fabric you want to cover it with. remember it needs to be fairly thin, nothing thick

the top one is kinda stapled on somehow, i don't remember how the bottom one is put on. just tape around it and paint it. the speakers are screwed into the door on the inside of the door panel. it's really easy to take off... just a couple bolts and screw with some common sense and you'll make it fine.

I believe the automotive cloth staples are known as hogrings. But yea I thought I remembered it being held on it that fashion
I used a rather thick vinyl to cover mine. Dan will vouch for how it looks
You can take the bottom piece out for paint you just have to epoxy it back in, or some other strong adhesive.

I did the vinyl + butterknife technique ... I'm mostly happy with how it looks (did it with dashrike, too

). One thing I've been meaning to get around to doing is repainting the plastic behind the door handles. It's starting to scrape off. How can I prevent that? I enameled it about 5 times, didn't seem to help much.
Also, what can I soak it with to get the paint out, and not melt the plastic? I seem to have issues with that ...
The surface needs prepped right for paint or the oils in the plastic will continue to make the paint chip.
There is a plastic paint prep. Its kinda of like a alchohal but it sucks the oils out. A very fine grit sand paper, tack cloth, then the prep, then paint.
As for getting it off...i dunno

using plastic paint primer or the "specially formulated" plastic ready paint. it doesn't come in a whole lot of colors though. you could always use sandpaper or sandblaster to get the paint off the plastic.

He'd have to be really carefull not to damage the plastic. Ofcouse, if he's painting it anyway... I doesn't really matter.

been just using some fine grit sand paper to make the pieces smooth and then primering them and painting them. i have had my door handle parts painted for a year now and they look the same as they did when i put them in. i am finishing up my center console this week sometime before re doing my dash cover and the door handle covers.
