Well first you learn to draw a flame.
Then you get skilled with an airbrush.
Then you get the money for paint for the project and trust me it is expensive.
Strip clean and prep surface(entire car, dont be cheap it will show)
Pick a base coat, typically something light so the next step pops better...but has been known to be a darker shade to pop the lighter...
(say we are doing a black with ghost)
Wanna go real crazy so we lay down a silver metallic base coat
Then you layout the flames(black mettalic). mask off the flames and spray easily inside the masked area. remove masking and grab a grey mettalic paint and go over the lines with your airbrush.
Next and most expensive step is the candy clear. For the project I am going over it will be a midnight, smoke, or black or combination of those words :lol: . The more coats you put on the darker it becomes and more 'ghosted' the flames become. There is no set amount and you will not lose the flames if you do too many layers. Typically people do not want a 1/4" of clear coat on a car so you go about 4-7 coats and it should look pretty tits.
You can make everything pop even that much more by adding mother of pearl to all the paints except the clear(duh)
You can do this with any color you just have to adjust your color choices. My personal favorite is a black ghost or a silver ghost.
Id love to see a true milk ghost though. I have heard of one but have not seen it. Its kind of a pearl mixed into the clear to give it a milky look and then sprayed over the different color whites for the look.
Please dont PM me about this I will not talk ANYBODY through this process. And doing it yourself and not being skilled enough to do so will fuck up the entire project...period. That is why this 10,000 dollar paintjob is expensive...because it takes skill. Doing it yourself will cost upwards of 2000 maybe if you are lucky.(but again a shitty hand leads to a shitty paintjob)

No you didnt I meant in general this project is huge and expensive and to be done right you need to practice and not just go by what others tell you.
The PM thing was directed at everybody because of the above...think of it this way, maybe I dont know a damn thing and just blew smoke up your ass for the 15 minutes it took me to type it. Get some books, do some studying, etc

ghost flames are easy
you choose a pearl color, tape it off and spray it, more so around the edges, then you clear over it..you dont need to remove cars orginal paint or cc. Its best to use a silver or purple pearl.
ghost flames can only be created in pearl cc or its not considered GHOST flames :twisted:

i was thinking about just taking the hood and trunk off, sandin them down or what ever, then repainting the body kit, hood, and trunk a few shades darker than the main body, then applyin the flames to the trunk and hood. i am just thinking about show car stuff. but even if i design a show car I would still aim for a great power gain.

true ghosted graphics are made through use of colored clear coats(candies) And you do not need to use pearl it just makes it look a lot nicer...same with mettalic. You can do anything you want...
You could even add multi color sparkle clear before the candy. Or mix it in with the candy. With paint your only limit is your pocket and mind...seriously

so if the hood, trunk, and kit is going to be darker than the rest of the body, the flames would barly be darker than that. and if i wanted the flames to sparkle i could put that sparkle stuff in the mixture, is that right?

pearls and candy's are the same thing
its just how much pearl you add makes it what you call it
little = pearl
some = metallic
alot = candy
a buddy of mine owns a body shop :)

I would have to disagree there jarred cuz I have held the three above.
Candy is a colored clear coat essentially.(no idea how its made)
Mother of Pearl is a white powder in which you mix into the paint(it is very colorful if you hold it in the light)
And there are many types of mettalic flake, sparkles, true flake, size of flake also mixed in with a claer or paint.

all those are painted after the car paint and before the clear coat, some places do mix pearls in the clear coat and leave it but the correct way is to paint on the pearl and clear it afterwards, atleast what im told and how my car was done.
there is several ways to do it but all in all pearls, metallics, candy's are just addners

So what would I do if I had a black Z and wanted to paint the kit, the hood, and the trunk the same color. like say I wanted to accent all of the above a kind of gold shade. what would i have to do? The way I am thinking it is done is that you would take like say the hood and sand it down and spray a choice base then a few coats of the gold and once that is dry how would i get a sparkle ghost flame.
I know about marking it out with that tape and sticky paper first but then after that i have no idea. pretty much the only painting experiance i have is i have a sub box and i custom painted that and i am proud to say that it didn't turn out as bad as I thought it would (givin the box is in crapy shape). but all i did on that was a stencil like thing.

My advice... you want good lookin ghost flames and have no car painting experience.... take it to someone who does. Trust me I've paint a few cars and its not as easy as you think... lot of variables to consider and I'm not even talkin about the custom work your wantin done.

yeah, but the cost of someone else doing it is sky high. i know it will be done right and everything but i don't want to rob my bank account.

Your not going to get a good ghost flame or ghosted image at all if you do not have experiance. Thats it. Theres no winging it with that stuff.
Ill pull up a few of my websites where to get pearls and stuff and show you the mix
And yes you can mix pearl or metallic flake in with anything at any stage, it just depends how it will look in the end. And the 'pearl' everyone thinks of is not what the pearl shops put in. There is a standard pearl paint and its just a standard...my car has pearl in from factory too along with a small flake... The 'pearl' everyone knows is mixed in with the paint as its about to be sprayed on. Its measured out in a cup and mixed with the paint in the gun....and for A LOT of money for the amount of pearl held in a medicin tube
edit*** scratch that Pearl prices have dropped since I have looked last and you can get a small tub of it for around 30 bucks. Apprently house of kolors line you can pick up on ebay for cheap as well. And again the more you put in the more pearl effect you will see.
You can also buy pearl paint with a premix of pearl already in it if you dont know what your doing... A nice pearl with mettalic flake would be nice.
Oh and everything I had sites for you can get on ebay for cheaper now :-/

Paint prices have gone down pretty well since the large automotive boom. Also the motorcycle craze has help to reduce paint prices as well. Buisness booming brings about good deals as always. Well good luck with your project and as always let us know how it turns out.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA...do you realize even if HOK would look at your car youd be looking at a bill of more than what a bmw would cost new
HOK sells their product to resellers and shops for a reason man :oops:
look around. go to car shows and ask people who have custom paints.

It's alright man people who don't know, won't know unless asked. Like Josh said you should go to a few car shows and just ask some people. Show seasons pretty much over till spring but as soon as the season comes back around you should run around to a few. I try to go to as many as possible and theres usually some nice jobs around.

I work a full time job.... actually sometimes it feels like more than a full time job. Anyways you just gotta keep your eyes and ears open. Same way everyone else hears about em. Can always ask me to I usually try to stay on top of em.
