Yes, but for the money you'll spend on it, get one of those $35 home theater setups from walmart instead. You won't have easy access to a powerful enough power supply, and making one is difficult at best. I did it before, but it required a lot of work, and could only run for 3-4 hours at a time.

My tc9 12" that I have in my car I will be taking out and making a new box for it tuned to 28 hz. I will be ordering a bash500 plate amp. My sub is dual 2 ohm and will be wired in series to a 4 ohm load. The bash will be giving it 500rms unregulated.
In short yes you can. You just have to know what power you will be running it off of and if your power supply will handle the certain impediance.
Oh and my car is getting a 10 that has almost identical output of my 12. I always go back to the 10s...

im running my 8" JL just straight from the head unit. pumps just a tad more than a cheap-0 wal-mart sub.

Me and a buddy of mine hooked up my rockford p2 sub and 900 watt amp to the surround sound at my house one night and it worked pretty damn good... idk about how long it would've lasted but was good for the 4 hours we used it...

I had a 400watt Jensen amp running off the power supply on my pc, its a 550watt power supply. I couldn't turn it wide open, but enough to make a few pictures fall of the wall.

I am currently in the designing stage of making a garage system. Which will include an old pioneer headunit, 1 10, 1 250watt plate amp, 1 comp power supply to power the headunit, and 2 sets of speakers for the mid range.
I still have my big 12 I plan to run as a HT setup but I dont have the room in my house or the money for a good reciever right now. Not to mention a 500 watt plate amp is like 250-300 bucks
